On Wednesday last week, right around Tax Time, NASA discovered and released a photo of what they call “The Hand of God”.
This is not my normal subject that I blog on. However, I feel it important enough to tell you about it because it gives me hope. I am willing to bet that it will give you hope as well. It’s my theory that this is no accident that God is revealing himself bit by tiny bit to all intelligent creatures in the universe and that there’s a reason why he does it so painstakingly slowly. When I was a young boy I thought in Church, ‘Well, if these people are so smart, why doesn’t God just come down from heaven and speak to us once in a while, every few days or at the very least once or twice a year?’ But, of course he doesn’t, does he? Oh, you can talk all day long about how God does come down every day in your heart and all that jazz, but I mean, why doesn’t he come down to Earth in a way that we would all know he was there helping us.
For example, he would certainly be welcome right here right now solving our economic problems, give us some advice on how to save all these companies that are going bust and cutting jobs. Or, he could tell us how to feed ourselves by giving us all new jobs. Or, during World War II, he could have come down and saved his people, the Jews from the Holocaust by castrating anyone who would follow the orders of that idiot Hitler in murdering so many innocent men, women and children. Or, he could have castrated Hitler himself, right? Or better yet, killed him in such a way that everyone on the planet would know without any doubt that this is not acceptable behavior on God’s Green Earth and if you want to do that kind of heinous act, you do so at the risk of your own life. Now, that would be what I would do if I were God, let me tell you. I’m pretty sure that’s what most of us would do when confronted with a Hitler or Stalin or Osama Bin Laden or any kind of misuse of human flesh. At least that’s what I used to think when I was very very young and foolish.
Today, I know that God for his own purposes doesn’t work that way. Over the span of my life, I have learned that God has a reason why he is not so heavy-handed with us and it’s probably due to the fact that he has created a ton of living creatures out there in the infinite exapnse of his universe and he is waiting to see which ones are worthy of him, which ones will survive these early evolutionary challenges and which species will make it to the finish line, whatever that is. We don’t have any idea of where or what the finish line really is, but we’re going to get there someday. There’s no doubt about that. But, we may not make it in first place unless we try a bit harder. And, it could be that making it to the finish line in last place is not good enough for honorable mention in the universal sweepstakes, the biggest Marathon event of all time.
See, I believe that life is nothing but a test. We each get our own personal tests and every species gets their own species test. Those who don’t pass the test are discarded and those that do are allowed to advance in the game. This is basically Darwinism, but Darwinism with a purpose. I think it’s all done for a reason. There has to be a reason for everything because it’s impossible that all of these so-called accidents are just random. I see a pattern in it. There’s a design and I feel sorry for those who don’t see this amazing set of principles and rules that we call the Laws of Physics. These are actually the patterns, the blueprints for making life happen in a vacuum. That’s what God calls it, I’m sure, or something like that because that’s what it is.
And, if you set up all these rules for Life to happen, then this is proof to me that there is something out there that wants to see life happen and more than that wants to see what life does after being given everything it needs to exist.
