Nasa this week has our astronauts up in space replacing old cameras and worn out circuit boards to upgrade the optical reach of perhaps the greatest scientific achievement of all time. The Cosmological Time Machine, also known as the Hubble Space Telesecope has given us a look at the universe in which we live like nothing before it.
Aristotle, the most famous Greek Philosopher of his day told us that the EARTH was the center of the universe. Then, 1800 years later, Copernicus showed us that the SUN was the center of the Universe. More recently we have discovered that the Big Bang is not only at the center of the universe but is also the PRIME DIRECTIVE of the universe, having created all the rules, all the laws of physics, all the information that the universe requires to function smoothly and all within the first Trillionth of a Trillionth of a second of the Big Bang.
Now, as the astronauts on the current Space Shuttle Mission repair the Hubble and upgrade all of its hardware, we learn that the Hubble will be able to see to withing 400 Million Years of the Big Bang, drawing ever so closer to that spot in the universe where it all began and trying to put together the pieces, viewing the most primordial particle, what they call the God Particle, the Higg’s Boson that is the Daddy of them all. Actually, that part of the experiment will be conducted by the Very Large Hadron Array in Cern Switzerland, the newest and largest particle smasher on the planet.
Ironically enough, the LHA is also broken and is being repaired at the same time that the Hubble is being repaired, having drawn so much electrical current in one of its early tests, it blew quite a few fuses and they’re having to replace half of the system’s wiring before firing up another shot at the quest for the ‘God Particle’.
Now, here is the point of all this. We’re very tiny insignificant little dowads of creatures, us human beings, clinging to an insignficant piece of dust floating amidst all of of the cosmic clutter out there. Yet, we have somehow got enough wires in our puny little brains to the major output of thought where we actually think we might be smart enough to figure it all out, find the God Particle, derive the latest scientific cosmological insights that will make us superior in all respects, highly regarded amongst all life forms in the universe. Yet, we can find no other life forms anywhere on any other tiny little spec of dust floating around near to us in the cosmic clutter.
Meanwhile back on the home front, more than half of our own species is starving to death. Nearly all our companion species are going extinct. We are suffocating, strangling, murdering, spearing all life in the oceans, pollutiung them as fast as we can find them and reducing our own chances for survival by going further and further for anything on the planet that will render us a profit.
Money and the people who create it demand more and more for their services. Governments are getting more and more impatient and unruly, threatening to create nuclear bombs if we don’t feed them, even as they starve out their own people in defiance of anything that we might find a redeeming quality. The creatures of the Earth who struggle hard and long to discover the whereabouts and the nature of God are perhaps not worthy to have this information just yet. And yet, that will not stop us, the most arrogant creatures ever known. To think that God cares. To think that we have to find him before we find true wisdom and knowledge is the height of folly.
